How You Can Help

Transition Bath Needs YOU!

Right now Transition Bath is looking for volunteers to fill the following roles:

Spread-the-worders (local): In as much time as it takes to visit your local shops you could be helping Transition Bath to raise awareness of the issue that will affect us all: Peak Oil, and the solutions we're working on together. Would you be willing to distribute flyers and posters for TB events round your local neighbourhoods (shops, post offices, churches etc.)? Time commitment: Regularly, once a month or so.

Spread-the-worders (media): Do you have contacts in the media:news/radio/local tv? We need people to let the Chronicle, Bath FM, Metro, Venue know what we're up to and when. Would you be willing to contact one or several media outlets to keep them in the loop (and us in the news). Time commitment: Regularly, once a month or so.

Have a good knowledge of local media? We need someone to compile a list of who and what we should be targeting. Time commitment: a few hours at the most, a one off.

Spread-the-worders (virtual): Hang out on Facebook much? We're looking for a few people who would be happy to manage (and increase the membership) of the FB group. If you prefer spreading the transition word elsewhere, that's fine too - we're not terribly techie here so let us know your suggestions on increasing our web presence. Time commitment: regularly, a few hours a month.

Eventers: Don't have time to get involved in the planning but want to help with our events. Like cake? We'll need random help with our open evenings and the big events we're currently devising. Think you might be able to lend a hand now and then? Time commitment: a couple of hours when required and available.

The Great Bath Reskilling

When we no longer have planned obsolence, imports from China, supermarkets and cheap t-shirts we will have to relearn the skills that made life possible - and pleasant - way back before our dependence on cheap oil - things like darning a sock or fixing a household item.

As part of the change to a Low Carbon Economy, TB are looking for anyone who is prepared to pass on such a skill or technique to others. Initially it should be teachable in an afternoon or a couple of hours but longer sessions could be organised. Quick examples we've thought of (but can't teach ourselves) are:

Reusing things / Darning socks / Running a meeting / Starting a community orchard / Servicing and repairing a bike / Renovating furniture - making furniture / Chicken Keeping / Seed Saving / Cleaning your House without Nasty Chemicals / Jam making and preserving / Clothes Making ...

Do you have a skill that will be useful in a post-cheap oil society? If so and you're happy to teach it please contact Peter Andrews 01225 319117 or email him here.

In the meantime, there's a chance to get involved in building a natural, low impact, low cost house build near Glastonbury. Working weekends in August will focus on Roofing, Strawbale walls and Lime render. For more information or to get involved with this non-TB project, contact: andyella@livingtao.co.uk

Please contact us at info@transitionbath.org.uk if you're interested in taking on one of these roles.
